English Synopsis
Michèle (Madeleine Robinson), a young fashion designer, arrives in a village in the south of France, at the hotel run by Cri-Cri (Madeleine Renaud), a Parisian who has withdrawn there to look after her lover Patrice (Paul Bernard), an idle aristocrat living in his château. She is waiting for Roland (Pierre Brasseur), her boyfriend, a painter in full decline, who eventually shows up, drunk and bitter.
The two already fragile couples see their precarious balance falter when the handsome young Julien (Georges Marchal), working on the nearby dam, enters their lives.

Michèle (Madeleine Robinson), une jeune créatrice de mode, arrive dans un village du sud de la France, à l’hôtel tenu par Cri-Cri (Madeleine Renaud), une Parisienne qui s’est retirée là-bas pour s’occuper de son amant Patrice (Paul Bernard), un aristocrate oisif vivant dans son château. Elle attend Roland (Pierre Brasseur), son petit ami, un peintre en pleine décadence, qui finit par se présenter, ivre et amer.
Les deux couples, déjà fragiles, voient leur équilibre précaire vaciller lorsque le jeune et beau Julien (Georges Marchal), qui travaille sur le barrage voisin, fait irruption dans leur vie.
