English Synopsis
Teenaged Jean (Alexandre Hamidi) leaves home when he realizes that his father expects him to take over the family farm. He goes to Paris to see his brother, Georges (Thierry Neuvic), a journalist, who is abroad covering the war in Kosovo. He meets Anne (Juliette Binoche), Georges's girlfriend, an actress, at the door of their building. She is on her way to the newsstand and he accompanies her. She buys Jean a pastry (sold in a small paper bag) and gives him her key, but makes it clear that the apartment is too small for three and leaves. Jean, walking on the boulevard, throws his empty paper bag into the lap of a Romanian beggar, Maria (Luminita Gheorghiu). Amadou (Ona Lu Yenke), a young Black teacher of the deaf, reproaches Jean for his behavior and the two young men start fighting. The police intervene. Amadou is arrested and Maria sent back to her native Romania.

Jean (Alexandre Hamidi), jeune adolescent, a quitté son domicile car il ne souhaite pas reprendre la ferme familiale. Il monte à Paris pour voir son frère Georges (Thierry Neuvic), journaliste, qui est absent pour le moment car il couvre la guerre au Kosovo. Jean tombe sur Anne (Juliette Binoche), actrice et compagne de son frère, à la porte de l’immeuble dans lequel il n’a pu entrer car le digicode a changé. Anne sortait pour acheter des journaux. Ils font un bout de chemin ensemble, dans la rue. Elle offre une viennoiserie à Jean, lui donne la clé de son appartement en précisant bien qu’il est trop petit pour trois, et s’éloigne. Jean, sur le boulevard qui le mène à l’appartement, jette le papier froissé de boulangerie à une Roumaine qui fait l’aumône, Maria (Luminita Gheorghiu). Amadou (Ona Lu Yenke), un jeune noir qui s’occupe de sourds, le surprend et lui reproche son geste. Les deux hommes se battent et la police intervient bientôt. Amadou doit se rendre au poste, et Maria est renvoyée dans son pays…
