(He throws a casino plaque worth 10,000 francs onto the table)

PERLE: Oh!

JÉRÔME: My kingdom for a railroad. And yet at the casino grill we’d have at least two steaks for that price.

PERLE: Well, if I don’t have a bit of bread and a can of pâté tonight, I’ll just lie down in the water and die like Ophelia.

JÉRÔME: First of all, Ophelia didn’t threaten to drown herself in exchange for a can of pâté, and second of all, if you were really going to go mad, it would have happened ten years ago. I gave you the chance. So don’t be so dramatic, I pray you.

PERLE : Eh bien moi si ce soir j’ai pas un quignon de pain et une boîte de pâté, je me couche dans l’eau et je meurs comme Ophélie !

JÉRÔME : Primo, Ophélie n’a pas marchandé sa noyade pour une boîte de pâté, et secundo, si tu devais devenir folle, tu le serais devenue il y a dix ans, je t’en ai donné l’occasion. Alors ne tombe pas dans le sublime, je t’en prie.
