Before long the culprit and his motive come to light. The commissaire indicts Bénédicte Calvez with having plotted the four assassinations to cover up that of her husband, Nobel Prize winner Jean Calvez. He claims: « Jealousy, Mrs Calvez, is what it’s all about, isn’t it? A jealousy that is as cold and relentless as death, of the sort only Shakespeare could conceive. You were jealous of your husband, weren’t you?”
"I gave him everything, everything, and he took it all, shamelessly. The glory, recognition from his peers, some of my scientific insights. I who had made this man watched him drift further and further away, and erase me from the official picture.”
"He also had increasingly attractive assistants hanging round him. Your spite turned into humiliation and then a desire for revenge. You ended up falling ill ― this cancer ― He had to die along with you and your love story had to end in the grave."
"Like all love stories."
Bénédicte Calvez is presumably thinking of Shakespearean tragedies like that of Romeo and Juliet.
