English Synopsis
L’abbé de l’Epée (Jacques Mathou) introduces his young deaf and mute students to the Court and announces that two of them will soon be married. The assembled courtesans are shocked at the prospect of that union which they regard as a mockery of the sanctity of marriage. Perceiving the opportunity of a witticism, Madame de Blayac (Fanny Ardant) ridicules the upcoming nuptials by comparing them to a play by Shakespeare starring circus animals: « Un jour j’ai vu jouer à Paris Roméo et Juliette, avec un singe et un caniche. »
