The year is 1929. George Valentin is on set, shooting a silent film, apparently a version of The Three Musketeers, when his producer, Al Zimmer, asks him to follow him into the projection room to watch a sound test of Valentin’s screen partner, Constance Gray, performing a scene from Romeo and Juliet in front of a microphone. The sound test begins with a title which reads: “Sound Test. Constance Gray in Romeo and Juliet. 5/12/29.” Although the sound test is supposed to be a demonstration of the sound technology, the viewer does not hear Constance’s speech and the film remains silent (with music but no noises or audible dialogue). The lines, which may easily be read on the actress’s lips, and the setting, which includes a balcony in the foreground, reveal that Constance is performing part of the balcony scene. The quotation is mouthed but not heard: George Valentin’s reaction to the projection is to dismiss the sound technology (and possibly also Gray’s performance) as ludicrous and flatly refuse to act in a sound film.

George Valentin est sur le plateau, tournant un film muet – apparemment, une version des Trois Mousquetaires – quand son producteur, Al Zimmer, lui demande de l’accompagner dans la salle de projection pour regarder un test de son. Le test est celui de Constance Gray, la partenaire de George à l’écran ; elle joue une scène de Roméo et Juliette devant un micro. Le test commence avec un titre : « Sound Test. Constance Grey in Romeo and Juliet. 5/12/29. » Bien que le test soit censé être une démonstration de la technologie sonore, le monologue de Constance n’est pas audible. Le film et le test restent muets (avec la musique, mais sans bruits ou dialogues audibles). Cependant, les paroles de l’actrice peuvent être lues sur ses lèvres, et le spectateur peut aussi conclure du décor – qui inclut un balcon au premier plan – qu’elle joue la fameuse scène du balcon.
