As part of a ploy with Mouffe to make his wife jealous, Félix Bonnadieu is having lunch with Mademoiselle Clorinde, a prostitute. Meanwhile, Mouffe informs Gabrielle of the existence of her husband’s mistress. Gabrielle is shocked and starts to cry. Félix returns home. Gabrielle has come to her senses and is quietly working on her tapestry depicting the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet.

GABRIELLE BONNADIEU: Is that you?

FELIX BONNADIEU: Yes. Have you taken up your tapestry again?

GABRIELLE BONNADIEU: Yes. I’m leaving my paupers for you. You’ll soon have your own armchair.

FELIX BONNADIEU: It’s superb.

GABRIELLE BONNADIEU: Romeo and Juliet, the balcony scene.

FELIX BONNADIEU: Lovers never enter through doors.

GABRIELLE BONNADIEU: Well, that’s nice. Is it yours?
